Now who would have thought that I would be blogging about Canada? What does our neighbor to the North have to do with Basketball? Well, my friend, you are in luck...follow my lead...er, ramble. Three words for you. Doctor James Naismith. Born in Canada, creator of the great sport we all know and love. I am sure he never thought that his game with two peach baskets and a soccer ball would ever have metamorphosis into the bling blinging, three point raining, cross over dribbling, tomahawk jamming, 360 spinning, last second swishing and gansta slapping rejections it is today.

Up until this post, the only thing I had to say about Canada was, "You think I'm sloooow because I am from Canada, eh?" Screw hockey, American's can't follow the puck. Anyone remember when Fox tried to make the puck glowing, back in the day to so we could? Pathetic. Screw all the actors from Canada (maybe except Pam Anderson, but even she is getting old now). The beer ain't all that, like me and my buds are gonna grab an ice cold Molson's or Labatt Blue? I'll pass. I'll take a Bud Light or Bud Heavy any day of the week. Well then, what is the best export out of Canada? Answer is simple, my dog Steve Nash. Plays the game like it should be played. A point guard that passes, shoots well from the field and from the line and had a good assist-to-turnover ration. Clutch player, tough player, assist master and mad athlete to boot. Dude could easily play professional soccer (joga bonito) if he so desired, but lucky for us, he plays basketball. Lucky for me, he is on my fantasy basketball team. I once dissed Don Nelson for saying he could build a team around Nash. His first few years in the L, out of Santa Clara, I never saw it coming. Oh how he proved me wrong. Now only if that one corrupt ref hadn't rigged the Western Conference finals, and the Suns had won the Championship, Nelly probably would have had his statement validated. I guess Nash did get back to back MVP's.

Like Curtis Blow so eloquently rapped, "Basketball is my favorite sport..." Instead of dissing the Canadians for everything from currency conversion to their lack of cuisine, let's thank them for the sport we all can't live without.

I visited the Magic Johnson 24-Hour Fitness last night for about 4 hours. My friend, Ben, brought me as his guest. I guess you could say we were ringing in the first day of the New Year right with some fitness, know what I mean.
The gym is pretty swell. They have this open-air atmosphere, where you can see everything upon entering pretty much. There is a pool and of course, what Magic Johnson establishment would be incomplete without, a basketball court. Although I don't think the MJ Theaters in Crenshaw don't have room for one they probably have a lil shootout for the kids. Those are always fun.
I played about three games with kids from the neighborhood. It was almost like being at Villa-Parke or Victory Park gym, except everyone was monthly paying, though I kind of doubt it. It was the first of January and most people were probably sleepin it off so I bet the desk clerk, who looked a bit young himself, probably let all those kids in for free.
We won every game we played because we had two bruisers on our team who would pass. I felt a bit slow and out of shape, but hey? What do you expect to happen when you play a bunch of teenagers who have only smoked two cigarettes in their whole life.

Even without much prior knowledge of the bands performing, the Pitchfork Music Festival was one of the coolest music festivals I've ever been to. I spent nearly all of Saturday at Union Park, and most of Sunday afternoon and evening. Here's why it was so awesome:

- Public transportation. Getting there couldn't have been easier, as the park was right off the Ashland stop on the Green Line, and only three stops outside of the Loop.
- Great music. Although I knew of only a few bands in advance (The New Pornographers and Of Montreal), I enjoyed listening to most of the acts.
- Superb planning. The festival was spread across three stages, and the layout/schedule was planned perfectly such that there was no overcrowding or volume interference at any of the shows.
- Flatstock. This trade poster festival at Pitchfork was awesome. I've always been a fan of cool concert art, and this was a collection of companies that all made cool, unique, modern posters for indie rock bands and venues.
- Affordable prices. The two-day ticket was only $35, and most impressively, bottled water was only $1!!!

Hits and Misses

Opening day of fantasy came and went. And while only two games were played, I'm already well into the fantasy mode.

10 observations from night one:
1) 108-66. Miami getting their asses handed to them by Chicago was fantastic. Who said defense doesn't win games? I was bummed Miami won it all last season (yeah I'm a hater), but nothing could kill their buzz more than a slap in the face in front of their home crowd by getting shut down like that. Big Ben. A stud. And 100% FT%? Not too shabby (yeah yeah, it's only one game).

2) Lakers beating the Suns without Kobe. I was shocked when I saw on the big screen that Kobe was in street clothes (not so sure about the pink shirt their buddy), and was even more worried when they let the Suns score 40+ points in the 1st quarter! When they made the announcement that Jack in a Crack was going to give coupons for free tacos if the Lakers could keep them under 90 points, you could hear the whole audience groan. Hahah.

3) Kujo for drafting Bynum. That kid looked great last night. 64% FG, 80% FT, 18 pts, 9 rbs and 5 dimes? Damn. Not too shabby for a 19 yr old. In comparison, I drafted K. Thomas who didn't really hurt me with an 80% FG and 100% FT, but not exactly beaming with potential either.

4) Wyatt for keeping Odom. That guy was on fire last night. First quarter looked shaky, but once he knew he had to bring it, he brought it. 34pts, 13 rbs and 5 dimes? Plus his usually low FT% was 100%. 5 TOs is a bit too high but hey, there's a reason why Wyatt is number 1 right now (okay okay, I know a lot of you haven't even started and today is really the beginning).

5) Sasha is a bitch. Nuff said.

6) Laker's new theme is "Lights Out". Kobe announced at the beginning of the game that the Staples Center got new lights. Hope they didn't spend too much money on them because I certainly didn't think it was that great.

7) Speaking of Kobe, how long is that guy going to be out? He's not going to Golden State. And reports say he's not playing the rest of this week.

8) Marion. Not a great night for him. But his bad nights are most players' average nights. Plus 4 blocks? Wowsers. But my favorite was when he talked about how their defense should've kicked in when they weren't scoring? Defense? The Suns?

9) Luke Walton is the new Rick Fox in that he's a liability (that one's for Wyatt).

10) Ronny Turiaf is a freak.

I need a break so let’s begin…

Ballers of the World: I like this team. Paul has to step it up and prove that he’s a legit fantasy baler, but he’s got talent. Okafor is a good center. Team FT% and 3s could hurt.

Silent Assassin: pam is a sneaky manager and this team is solid. The gasol injury hurts a lot. I like the miller okur combo. Davis and korver could be steals.

Biaviians: LJ is also a solid manager but I don’t know about this team. When will kobe be 100% and who will get assists on this gunner roster? Lots of TO prone players. Plus darko is a gamble

3 O’clock: no problem leading the league in FT%. but will cassell start for the clips? Will peja wake up from last year’s coma? Could be a contender though. I like the balance.

Sex panther: the lbj nash combo is pretty sick, but can aki contend for the crown without camby putting up those sick numbers? Shaq and artest kills the FT%

Jagshemash: arenas, brand, and AK47 on one squad is pretty insane. But the rest is pretty dicey. Major problems at center, and don’t really have a dime dropping PG.

Floppy Cock: my team seems decent, but I’m not too thrilled. Could be hurting with blocks. We’ll see if diaw keeps putting up those triple double type games.

Och cinco: sorry gbz, but how do you take redd in round 1? He’s the same player as ray ray. Plus those forwards frye, Williams (out 8 weeks by the way), chandler, and diogu are stretches at best. You got tons of threes, but not much balance buddy.

Baba: I like this team. Look at all those SG/SFs. Nice steals on draft day too with bibby and smith to go with t mac and PP. interesting team.

11: this team will go as amare does. What I’ve seen of him in the preseason doesn’t look all that good. He had that one insane year, and I’m not sure he can top it. Plus magette always gets hurt.

Tenacious D: can a team lose with marion? The starbury pick seemed a bit high. This team needs an assist man but really the matrix makes any team legit.

Stunner shades: this autodraft team looks good on paper. Camby, oneal, bosh, and howard on one squad? Is reeg gunna set his lineup?

Season starts tomorrow, and as always, you gotta hope your squad stays healthy. Good luck to all.

Which we all know means "Kobe Bryant is a whale's vagina."

Actually, apparently the translation says: "Well the NBA is in great hands, but if I had to pick the single greatest player on the planet, I take Kobe Bryant, without hesitation."

Which leads me to believe that this translation is either completely wrong, or they weren't actually interviewing Michael Jordan the basketball player, but Michael Jordan-Heinz, the beer-drinking, sausage-eating, sheet metal worker who lives in Berlin and is a big lakers fan.

Obviously, it would have been too much for even an egomaniac like Jordan to name himself the greatest player on the planet, but what about Russell, Kareem, Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Magic...and of course Vince Carter???

Anyway, I'm going to continue pretending that the translation really meant to say that "Kobe Bryant likes to feed on whale vagina." That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

When will B-Ball start? Not soon enough considering my fantasy football league was ruined this week by a BS trade and I yearn for our legitimate league to start up. For those of you who care, one guy duped another by trading Warrick Dunn for Sean Alexander (Atawn Jamison for Lebron anyone?). To add to the BS, the trade failed by a veto vote but was over ruled by the Commissioner because he said that both parties “wanted the trade to go through” (no shit). This same guy duped another team last week by getting Steve Smith for three trash players, but it went through and I didn’t really care. Now this guy has Sean Alexander, Steve Smith, and Larry Johnson on one team! Utter bullshit. Good thing I haven’t paid my money yet.

Oh and, Laker’s Media Day was today. Kwame and Kobe… wow, what a 1 2 punch

Laker Report: Can the Bobcats Help the Lakers Get Harrington?

Just when a deal with the Indiana Pacers seemed inevitable, Atlanta Hawks free agent Al Harrington fired his agent Andy Miller fueling speculation that the Harrington chase will begin anew. Harrington has subsequently turned to Arn Tellem for representation. Though it will take two weeks for the paperwork to make the agent change official, Tellem is able to negotiate a deal and receive his commission should an agreement be reached prior to the transition. In other words, a new Harrington deal could happen immediately should the Hawks, Harrington and a third party strike a deal. How does this impact the Los Angeles Lakers? Well it opens the Al Harrington door, albeit slightly. ESPN.com reported that the Lakers did make a pitch earlier in the summer, but were rebuffed. For the record, this was after the signing of Vladimir Radmanovic . . . and thus the Lakers were clearly offering a trade package and not the mid-level exception. The deal that was almost reached between the Pacers and Hawks involved the Pacers taking on the contract of John Edwards along with Harrington. The Hawks would not add a single player, but would receive a first round pick and cash. The hold-up with Indiana allegedly centered on how much cash and pick protection. The key to the trade was the $7.6 million trade exception generated when the Pacers traded Peja Stojakovic to the New Orleans Hornets for essentially $250K. Despite some cries of shenanigans, suggesting the Hornets made the move to ensure that Harrington wasn't traded West; neither side did anything against the rules. It is that rather large exception that enables the Pacers to take Harrington without dumping players on the Hawks. Atlanta appears to be holding a tight budget line with the legal battle brewing on the ownership front. The Lakers, along with just about every other team in the league, do not have the ability to make a two-team deal that doesn't land salary in Atlanta. All but the Bobcats are out of cap room and Charlotte appears to be uninterested in Harrington, still holding onto their cap space for some unknown future pursuit. Which is why Laker GM Mitch Kupchak needs to get Charlotte GM Bernie Bickerstaff on the phone (or even Phil Jackson call up new Bobcat minority owner, Michael Jordan) to orchestrate a three-team deal. Currently the Bobcats' total salary is just above $31 million (not including the impending signing of Argentinean forward Walter Herrmann). Teams must spend a minimum of $39,851,250 in total salary this season. If they are below that mark, the difference is automatically distributed to their existing players. In other words, if the Bobcats don't add a chunk of payroll before season's end, the money will be given as bonuses to the likes of Raymond Felton, Gerald Wallace, etc. For facilitating a deal, the Bobcats could land the likes of Chris Mihm, Brian Cook and Aaron McKie (as filler), raising their team salary to the minimum level but still substantially below the cap . . . without giving up a single player. The Hawks could dump Edwards on either the Lakers or Bobcats, receive cash from LA and an unprotected pick . . . essentially equaling the offer from the Pacers. In this theoretical three-way deal, the Lakers could pay Harrington significantly more than the Pacer offer (up to $10.76 million in the first year, though that might be higher than necessary). The Bobcats in turn get a pair of big men on one-year contracts, while upping their salary to the league minimum. Of course other teams will be making offers that the Lakers will have to compete against. If the Bobcats are interested in making a three-team trade, they will certainly shop around for the best prospects available. If Charlotte has no interest in helping Atlanta move Harrington, the best the Lakers can do is offer a similar package of Mihm, Cook and pieces directly to the Hawks. If Atlanta decides to take back contracts for Harrington, the Lakers probably lose out when measured by talent offered. Perhaps the expiring nature of LA's contracts would help, but no one seems confident that the Lakers are a frontrunner in the Harrington pursuit. The Bottom Line: It's apparent the Lakers have interest in Harrington, but just how much they're willing to offer is uncertain. Harrington's new agent may have a history with the Lakers (helped orchestrate the Vlade Divac for Kobe Bryant trade), but Tellem currently represents Jermaine O'Neal, Joe Johnson and Shelden Williams. His current connection to the Lakers is through Kwame Brown and Jordan Farmar. The agent change doesn't signify any specific benefit to the Lakers. It only opens the door once again league-wide for offers. The Pacers still are considered the favorite. The Lakers are entirely dependent on the participation of the Atlanta Hawks to get a deal done. Should a three-team trade be feasible, LA would also be relying on the Charlotte Bobcats. The good news is that Tellem's arrival doesn't delay a deal. The paperwork to switch agents can still be pending while a trade gets done. Hopefully closure will be reached soon, regardless of where Harrington lands...I imagine the signing ate up some of the Hornets 8 plus million dollars short fall. Free agent point guard Jannero Pargo agreed to a two-year, $2.1 million deal with the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN.com.

If Kupchak can manage to pull this off, I'll take back what I said about him before. That he's not the biggest douchebag this side of Madison Square Garden.
